Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the Lord…royal diadem in the hand of thy God.
-Isaiah 62:3
Summary of Isaiah chapter 62:
The business of prophets was both to preach and pray. In this chapter,
1. The prophet determines to apply closely and constantly to this business, Isaiah 62:1.
2. God appoints him and others of his prophets to continue to do so, for the encouragement of his people during the delays of their deliverance
3. The promises are here repeated and ratified of the great things God would do for his church, for the Jews after their return out of captivity and for the Christian church when it shall be set up in the world.
4. The church shall be made honourable in the eyes of the world, Isaiah 62:2.
5. It shall appear to be very dear to God, precious and honourable in his sight, Isaiah 62: 3-5.
6. The Lord Himself does not rest with regard to Zion; He does not want His petitioners to keep silence in their prayers for Israel; and He does not want His people to leave Him alone concerning Israel’s deliverance, Isaiah 62:6-7
7. It shall enjoy great plenty, Isaiah 62:8-9.
8. It shall be released out of captivity and grow up again into a considerable nation, particularly owned and favoured by heaven , Isaiah 62:10-12.
Today’s Verse:
The prophet here tells us that
He intended to fix the hearts of believers on the kingdom of Christ, which it was the more necessary to adorn and magnify by these illustrious titles, because hitherto it was not only obscure but at a great distance.
It was needful to provide the Jews who devote their whole attention to earthly advantages. The Prophet therefore reminds them, that the return to their native country was but the forerunner of that exalted rank which was to be expected at the manifestation of Christ.
And the diadem of the kingdom. He calls the Church God's crown, because God wishes that his glory should shine in us; and in this it is proper that we should behold and admire the inconceivable goodness of God, since, notwithstanding that we are by nature filthy and corrupted, and more abominable than the mire of the streets, yet he adorns us in such a manner that he wishes us to be "the diadem of his kingdom."
Let us therefore be aroused by this goodness of God to the desire of leading a holy life, that his image may more and more be formed anew in us.
