The LORD has chosen Zion, He has desired it for His dwelling. Psalm 132:13

Consolation

I will perform that good thing which I have promised…

-Jeremiah 33:14

Summary of Jeremiah chapter 33:

This chapter is a continuation of prophecies of spiritual blessings on the church of Christ in Gospel times, of which the return of the Jews from captivity, and the benefits following on that, were types. The place where Jeremiah had this prophecy communicated to him, is the prison,

1.    The prophet Jeremiah predicts a restoration of Israel and Judah to the favor of God, attended with such glorious circumstances as shall astonish all the world, Jeremiah 33:1-9.

2.    Their prosperity from that period is then described by a beautiful enumeration of circumstances, Jeremiah 33:10-13.

3.    It leads to the promise of the Messiah, the grand subject of the prophetical writings, and the happiness and stability which the children of Israel shall enjoy under his government; promises which, in so far as they respect the great body of the Jews, remain still to be fulfilled, Jeremiah 33:14-26.

Today’s Verse:

This passage of Jeremiah is within a section of the book known as The Little Book of Consolation (ch. 31-33),  in which God offers to save them and bring them back into the land. He says that their guilt is great which caused the exile, but now Yahweh will restore their health. God will make a new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31 – 34) which is unconditional and written on their hearts unlike the old Mosaic covenant.

God speaks  “I will perform that good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah.”  The promise is to all the people, both Israel and Judah, suggesting a future united kingdom.  Yahweh made the promise, and Yahweh will fulfill it.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Thanks for this day. You are good God , and You are faithful. You are omnipotent and the fount of all wisdom. You are merciful and gracious, compassionate and kind. You are diametrically opposed to sin, yet tenderly inclined to lift up the worst of sinners. I come today worshiping and remembering who You are, who You’ve been, and who You will still prove to my heart that You are, as I trust and pray in the pure and holy name of Jesus, Amen.
