And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
-1 Jn 2:17
Today’s Verse:
John says that this world is temporary. The world is temporary for each person, since every person dies. The physical earth is also temporary, since God will make a new earth in the end (Revelation 21:1). As a result, the desires of this world are also temporary. Believers are to resist evil desires, following the example of Jesus (Matthew 4:1–11).
The opposite of loving the world is not only loving the Father but also doing the will of the Father. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). John said in 1 John 5:3, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.”
If you love God, you will love what he wills. It is empty talk to say I love God but I don’t love what God loves.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thanks for this day. Father, you know me better than I know myself. You know my fears and my desires. You know how much I want this. You know how much I will be devastated if this doesn't happen. I know you love me. I know you have a plan for me. Please, Lord, don't let my desires blind me to your will. If this is not within your plan for me, let your will prevail. Help me follow your will, Father. Give me peace about whatever is to come. If this falls through, I will know it is your hand. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
