“A man dedicates his house to be holy to the Lord.” Leviticus 27:14
Leviticus 27 deals with the various kinds of things that men may promise to dedicate to God. The Israelites were required to give or dedicate certain things to the Lord. However, many wished to go beyond this and dedicate themselves or another family member, additional animals, a house, or a field to God. This chapter teaches men to be cautious about the vows they make. It teaches the folly of hasty commitments by specifying that some vows cannot be reversed and that in those cases can be a costly redemption. Earlier chapters of Leviticus have largely dealt with compulsory offerings and obedience. Chapter 27 deals with that which is purely voluntary. While the first obedience is that of duty, the second is that of delight. Worshiping God is an act of voluntary vow-offering where one needs sacrifice or offer out of love to God and not just law.
