God is love (1 John 4:16), and His commandments are an expression of His love. The purpose of the commandments is to help us live in accordance with God's will and harmonious relationships with one another. God's commandments are to guide us to "love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith” (1 Timothy 1:5).
Jesus Christ Himself followed all the commandments of God and lived according to it. “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).
The indwelling love for God helps us recognize that God's love is shown in His commandments. This leads us to fulfill the commandments, not out of fear of punishment, but out of love to our heavenly Father: "By this, we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep His commandments, for this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome" (1 John 5: 2-3).
