You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you. Psalms 128:2
The psalmist starts off by stating the theme of the psalm: “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord.” After stating the theme, the psalmist defines that those who fear the Lord are those who walk in God’s ways. The blessing from God stated in verse 1 is not for everyone but only for a specific set of people that is those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. The blessings are very specific relating to work, marriage and family.
NIV translates verse 2 as “You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.” God will bless our work. This does not necessarily mean becoming wealthy but rather finding fulfillment in our work and that our work will provide for our needs to be happy and content. God wants us to enjoy the fruit of our work and that is His desire for us. Without God work becomes toil. We will not find true blessing or satisfaction in our work apart from God. Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 says: “A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?”
