He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. – Mic 7:19
Our God is a compassionate, kind & Long-Suffering God. We’ve seen it multiple times, just this month.
When we compare our above statement with today’s verse though, there is a contradiction.
How come? Why does God need to be compassionate again?
We are in the last chapter of Micah and when we read through it, we find that Israel/Judah has not been faithful to God.
All around him, Micah sees a society that is in a state of moral decay. Gang warfare is widespread, and wrongdoers buy security from judges. Wealthy men and other influential individuals bribe the government for their evil plans (2-3). Even the best of them cannot be trusted. People cannot trust even their friends and relatives (4-6).
Those few faithful to God are part of a nation that is doomed for judgment. But they know also that somehow God will save the faithful (7). Micah acknowledges the justice of God's punishment in allowing the people to be taken into captivity.
Finally, Micah recognizes the excellencies of Israel's God. He is a God of mercy, faithfulness, and constant love, and only because of these characteristics does he forgive the sins of his people. His punishment of them is temporary, but his forgiveness is eternal (18-20).
Though from time to time God has to chastise us to get us to the right path, Our God is a God who delights in Mercy – v18.
The word Micah actually means – “Who is like our Lord”
