The LORD has chosen Zion, He has desired it for His dwelling. Psalm 132:13

Freedom in Christ

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2

Today’s verse tells us that we have been set free from sin and death. We are no longer bound by sin, and its desires. Rather we have been set free. Sin no longer has a hold on us. The freedom of Christ is not only a freedom from death as the major consequence of sin but also freedom from another consequence, the guilt of sin. Therefore, we become blameless before God through Jesus Christ.

All the good deeds in the world will not set us free from the law of sin and death. To be set free, we need new life imparted by God’s Spirit. Along with this new life comes complete justification from all our sins (8:1). The new life means that we are now dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. This verse primarily refers to the new life that the Spirit gives in regeneration. That new life comes to us “in Christ Jesus” and frees us from “the law of sin and of death.” This new life in the Spirit works after regeneration by giving us the power to overcome sin in daily life. Sin still tries to hold us down, but the life that comes from the indwelling Spirit gives us the power to soar above sin and the resulting death.
