The LORD has chosen Zion, He has desired it for His dwelling. Psalm 132:13

Humility, Contrition, and Trembling

“I will look to him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word,” Isaiah 66:2

In this passage, God is speaking through prophet Isaiah. God begins by proclaiming that heaven above is His throne declaring that the vastness of the earth is nothing when compared to His immensity. God is enthroned in the heights of heaven. The sovereign Lord reigns over all the earth. As He looks down from heaven, this verse portrays who among His lowly creatures would capture His attention. In this verse there are three qualities which would draw His attention to us.

First, God will look to “the one who is humble. God is speaking of the lowliness of heart that He requires of His servants. In our lives God is recognized to be high and lifted up with great humility as we are just mere humans. Second, God looks to the one who is “contrite of spirit.” The word contrite means one who is stricken or smitten. We are nothing without Him so instead of self-elevating ourselves, we are to be humble yielding to God under His mighty hand. Third, God will look to the one “who trembles at my word”. When we are rooted in the fear of the Lord, this fear will produce a devotion and reverence to God. God will honor the one who honors His Word.

Have a blessed day!
