Revelation 1:16. “In his right hand, he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.”
The book of revelation is a revelation of Jesus Christ. What it means is that in this book, Jesus’s deity was revealed and how He will return and what will happen before His final arrival to take His people with Him and renew the earth He created. In our today’s verse, Apostle John is describing the glimpse of the one who is the only righteous worthy to sit on the throne from where He will come and judge the whole humanity. In this verse, we see the imagery of His Right hand, His Mouth, and His Face. The Seven Stars, the sharp two-edged sword, and the sun is shining in full strength. The explanation starts from the next verse. The verse today shows the glory no one ever had and never will have going forward. He is in control, and He will pass the final judgment to all who have received the word but have not accepted; his face reflects his light that will expose all whatever is in darkness.
What is especially noteworthy is the fact that Jesus holds the “angels” in His right hand. Although their work is challenging, the omnipotent Head of the church protects His servants. The fact that Jesus is holding the stars in His right hand may suggest that they belong to Him and are protected by Him. In His gospel, John quotes Jesus as affirming that no one can snatch His sheep—all believers—out of His hand (John 10:28).
John saw a sharp two-edged sword proceeded from Jesus’ mouth (Revelation 1:16). The two-edged sword refers to the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). The Romans used a two-edged sword to kill their enemies by stabbing them. Jesus’ Word condemns the wicked and assigns them to the second death (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:14).
He holds all that belongs to Him in the context (the seven messengers, the seven churches); those messengers and churches are tasked to share the good news, and he protects them all to continue the work. Using His words as a double-edged sword that helps to separate sin from the righteous and it is that word which is sharper than any two-edged sword, and which lays bare the thoughts and intents of the soul (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12. Isaiah 49:2). This is the weapon with which Christ will subdue His enemies; no carnal weapon is needed (2Corinthians 10:4). Those that take any other sword in hand than this to advance His kingdom will perish with the weapon to which they have appealed (Revelation 13:10; Matthew 26:52), but those who arm themselves with this will find its strength through God. With this weapon of His word, He fights against His adversaries (Revelation 2:12; Revelation 2:16; Revelation 19:15; Revelation 19:21); with this, He lays bare the hidden hypocrisies of men, cuts off the diseased members, and wounds that He may heal.
The two-edged sword; is the resemblance of the edge of Old Testament and the New; “the Old Testament, cutting externally our physical carnality; the New Testament, internally our spiritual sins” It has the double edge of its power to rebuke sin and self-righteousness; the evil of wrong-doing and the evil motives which wait on right-doing; the two edges of which will cut off sin from man, or else man in his sin.
John also saw Jesus’ face. It’s shown like the sun at its brightest moment. John had witnessed a similar sight of this divine glory when Jesus was transfigured at the top of a high mountain (Matthew 17:1–2).
The churches receive their light from Christ and the gospel and hold it forth to others. They are golden candlesticks; they should be precious and pure; not only the ministers but the members of the churches; their light should so shine before men, as to engage others to give glory to God.
So let’s read His words carefully, ask for Him to lead you with wisdom and equip you with the armor of His words that helps separate the physical carnality and spiritual sin from your daily life so you may take the light from His face and reflect His glory on this earth until He returns.
Promise: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
Prayer: Dear Lord, Heavenly Father mighty wonderful God. Lord, thank You for the revelation of Jesus Christ which You gave to your servant John to show us all that must come to pass in the not too distant future. Thank You that Christ took the terrible punishment for my sin and that I have been clothed in His righteousness, by faith in His death and Resurrection. I pray that my life would be a faithful and true witness of Your goodness and grace to me and that I will hear Him say well done, good and faithful servant. May I eschew every kind of evil, hold fast to His Word of truth, and listen carefully to all that the Holy Spirit says to the churches – for Your greater honor and glory. In Jesus’s Holy Name, I pray Amen.
Have a blessed day!
