And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself. -John 12:32
In this chapter John describes the final events of Jesus’ public ministry.
Just six days before the Passover, Jesus is treated to an honorary dinner at the home of Lazarus, whom He has recently raised from death. At this dinner, Lazarus' sister, Mary, anoints Jesus with expensive oil. Jesus then enters Jerusalem to great fanfare; this caused the anger Roman authorities which inspires a murder plot against Lazarus and Jesus. Many people came to see him, and Jesus speaks to the people above verse and indirectly conveying about his death.
In today’s verse the verb used for lifted has a deliberate double meaning. It means both a literal elevation (as in being raised up on a cross) and exaltation (being raised in rank or honor). Jesus promised that when He was
lifted (elevated, exalted) on the cross. Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension are all linked to His glorious exaltation and the drawing of sinners to Himself (Romans 6:9–10; 1 Peter 3:18–22; Revelation 1:18).
He would draw all peoples to Himself. It means when Jesus is on the cross, some for him, and others against him, some to express great regret for him, and others to disgrace him to witness his crucifixion.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I lift you up, draw men into your kingdom.
Help me to sow, so you will water. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
