Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. -1 Cor 10:31
The context of today’s verse is eating sacrificed food to idols. Eating and drinking is the focal point here. At the time of Paul, people in Corinth, both believers and unbelievers, regularly used to eat the sacrificial meals of various deities as a way to honor and sanction the divinity of the deity. Eating together was important to network within the community and build friendships. Those that avoided the meals from the public sacrifices were viewed as outcasts by society.
Paul says to the believers of Corinth that if an unbeliever invites you to dinner, then eat whatever is offered you. However, if someone says, “That meat was sacrificed to idols”, then do not eat it on account of the one who told you. It is not that the taste of the food is in any way changed. The main reason is to avoid causing anyone to think Christians approve of idol worship in any way.
Also, Paul says, “Whether you eat or drink, do all for the glory of God.” If you choose to eat and drink, do it for God’s glory. If you abstain from eating and drinking, do that for God’s glory. Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, use me as a vessel to Your praise and glory – in such a way that You increase, and I decrease until it is Christ living in and through me, to His praise and glory. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
