“Do not become idolaters as were some of them” – 1 Corinthians 10:7
Apostle Paul is exhorting the Corinthian church to avoid Israel’s mistakes that included idolatry. He is reminding them of how the Israelites who experienced God’s deliverance from Egypt and saw many mighty miracles, fell into idolatry by making and worshipping a golden calf.
Idol worship is detestable in the sight of God. In the Ten Commandments, God commanded the people of Israel not to make any graven image and bow down to worship them. But the people of Israel repeatedly committed idol worship and paid serious consequences.
As believers, we might confidently say that we have never committed idol worship. But have you considered the fact that anything we love or treasure above God in our lives, is certainly an idol? Let us take a moment to examine our lives and get rid of any secret idols!
“Let the one who thinks he stands watch out that he does not fall”. 1 Corinthians 10:12
