Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, But to Your name give glory. Psalm 115:1
The sole purpose of human existence is to glorify God in our whole being, however, each of us has a flesh, a self-willed nature, which loves enjoying in one’s self. Satan always tries to shift our trust from God over to our own successful ways. We go from praising God on how He answered prayers to gloating that we are pretty good Christians, especially compared to others. When we forget the source of God’s work in our lives, we always get prideful. Psalmist urges us to Glorify God alone for His mercy, truth, and sovereignty. He obviously deserves all glory because He is God. There’s no one else who is worthy of glory and worship. God is infinitely glorious. There’s no one more loving, more beautiful, more awesome, more praiseworthy. He alone is worthy of all glory. Our good works are but a result of the Lord’s gracious work within us. All the glory goes to God because He is at the root of anything that we call success.
John the Baptist was an impressive man. He was miraculously conceived and filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. Jesus said (Matthew 11:11), “Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone great than John the Baptist.” Yes, some of John’s disciples were jealous of him when the word came that Jesus was attracting larger crowds, John made the classic statement (John 3:30), “He must increase, but I must decrease.” May that be true of all of us as we grow in Christ. May this be our daily prayer- “Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, But to Your name give glory.” Amen.
