The LORD has chosen Zion, He has desired it for His dwelling. Psalm 132:13

Ignorant sins: the consequence and the cure

Jul 19th, 2023:

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent. Acts 17:30

We see ourselves committing many ignorant sins in our daily lives. When we come into the light of the knowledge of our sins, we might refrain from doing them again without truly repenting of them. Or worse yet, we might choose to feign ignorance to continue doing them. The Law makes it pretty clear in Lev 5:17 that ignorance is no excuse for consequences of a sin (once it is realized as a sin). “If anyone sins, doing any of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, though he did not know it, then realizes his guilt, he shall bear his iniquity”.

We have a holy God who expects holiness from his people. He has given his word to each one of us in the present age and expects us to seek out his holiness and commandments through his word and apply it to our lives. We must strive for holiness (without which no one will see God- Heb 12:14).

But, as with all other sins, God is gracious towards us. He seeks for us to repent and come to him for forgiveness. When sins come to light, His grace comes to light in a greater way. There is now no condemnation for us who are in Christ Jesus. We must confess our sins and put our faith in Jesus to cleanse every sin, even the ones we were ignorant about. But that is something we must do. Acknowledge these sins we committed in ignorance when we come to know of them, and confess them at the throne of grace. Then we can put complete trust on the Lord Jesus, that he has washed us of this unrighteousness. We can ask God to give us the strength not to commit that sin further.

Prayer: Dear Father, show me the sins that I commit in ignorance, Lord and please wash me and cleanse all my sins, and help me to grow to the fullness of Christ.
