….peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds….Phillipians 4:7
The context behind this verse is Paul is appealing to the Philippian believers regarding how they should handle disagreements within the church. Paul is particularly concerned about the argument between two women in the Philippian church, Euodia and Syntyche. Paul’s advice is to focus on our ability to rejoice in our fellowship with Christ. With a proper focus on positive things, we can experience peace through the power of God.
In this verse we see three important things about peace of God. First, God’s peace is supernatural and unexplainable. It is truly amazing how God can and will respond during times of difficulty which is beyond our understanding. Second, God’s peace “will guard your hearts.” The Hebrew translation of guard means to keep above all things. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” God’s peace will guard our heart with more vigilance than anything else. Third, God’s peace will guard “your minds through Christ Jesus.” As believers we need to have a mind that is set on Christ. It is to be present with God in the moment, not busy doubting and fearing, but praying and obeying. As we choose prayer and trust during turmoil we will experience the peace of God.
