When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things…but because of his mercy. Titus 3:4,5
The word ‘not’ here emphasises that God does not save us by our efforts. Salvation does not spring from works. Besides our works of righteousness is like filthy rags. God saved us not by our works of righteousness. He doesn’t give us eternal life based on what we do. We are hopeless if we look at ourselves.
The word ‘but’ here is a strong contrast. God saved us by His grace and mercy alone. He saved us because of His kindness and Agape Love towards us. Though we are hopeless when we see ourselves but we are valuable in His sight.
Once we accept Him as our personal saviour and receive the joy of salvation by His Grace and mercy we ought to devote ourselves in doing good things that are excellent and profitable to everyone. For this is His Will.
