See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you. John 5:14
Jesus found the paralytic man whom he had healed at the pool of Bethsaida and reminded him to sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon him. He did not reproach the healed man but simply reminded him of his healing and the cause for his paralysis. This statement clearly indicates that this man had sinned and continued to sin as a lifestyle. Continued sin may bring on a much worse condition.
Sickness is not always the result of sin in the Bible, but sometimes it is. The “worse thing” here is eternal suffering for sin. That is far “worse” than this man’s 38 years of paralysis. Christ's work on the cross alone can deliver us from eternal sin. Post salvation, man is still susceptible to various wickedness that he/she needs to get delivered from. This wickedness is dangerous and might lead to worse consequences. May the Lord open our eyes to see our status in His scales.
