Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” John 2:19
Jesus was answering Jews when they questioned His authority as Jesus cleansed the Temple. The beautiful Temple in Jerusalem was ordained by God to be a sacred house for the purpose of worship and prayer. But because of proud and rebellious religious leaders, the holy Temple of God had instead become a house of merchandise. Jesus entered this temple at the beginning of His ministry and overturned the tables of the moneychangers and cleanses the Sanctuary of His Father, from the filthy practices of sinful men.
Jesus Christ meant the Temple being His Human flesh. The Lord Jesus Christ was fully Man, yet He was also fully God, and His angry challenge was issued as a prediction of His forthcoming death and glorious resurrection and also the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. by Romans. As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The Temple of His Body was destroyed, but through death, He conquered him who had power over death (that is the devil) and in three days that same physical Body was raised up so that all who believe in Him, might not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus is better than the temple, and He is the true temple for us, and He also says- “we are the temple of God” and should be holy. May God help us as we search our hearts and examine ourselves- 'If there any areas in the temple of our body, that our God is angry, and needs to be destroyed?’ if so, the Lord Jesus Christ is saying- “Destroy them, I will raise you up again.”
