You are good, and do good; teach me Your statutes. Psalm 119:68
Every year manufacturing companies release a better version of their products by doing some upgrades, for example, Apple Inc releases upgraded versions of their products every year and we feel there is no end to it, in contrast to when God created the Universe. He saw it as good, in other words, it is perfect and there is no better version needed. God’s Creation is good because He is good. The goodness of God is His eternal character. From God’s goodness flows His good works. God modeled His goodness in creation, He made His goodness pass before Moses, God meant it for good in Joseph’s life despite his brothers meant it for evil, the good hand of God was with Ezra and Nehemiah, Psalmist David tasted God’s goodness, and many other saints did contemplate God’s goodness. Every good and perfect gift comes from God and the greatest gift to humankind is Salvation, the goodness of God leads us to repentance. God’s goodness is perfectly displayed in His Son, Jesus. In Christ, we who were once dead in our sin have been made alive by His grace through faith. We who rebelled against God’s goodness have been redeemed by God’s overflowing goodness through Christ.
The prayer of the psalmist, therefore, ought to also be ours: teach me your statutes. How could we not long to know more of our God’s good Word, especially when it is through His Scriptures that we come to know Him? Indeed, being captivated by God’s goodness will never fail to drive us ever deeper into His Word, for in them we can “taste and see that the LORD is good” (Psalm 34:8)!
God is good all the time, and all the time God is good.
