And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God. 2 Cor 6:16
The above verse is given to us in the context of telling us not to be unequally yoked and the most common usage of this passage is with respect to marriage. This is yoke and not yolk :-).
Yoke is the crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals.
One important fact we understand about the animals under the yoke is that they should belong to the same species. Have you ever even imagined an ox and a donkey under one yoke? Or a cow and a pig under one yoke? Or a goat and a horse under the same yoke? In a marriage also both the bride and the groom should be of the same species, that is, born again people. People in whom the Holy Spirit dwells.
Secondly, even after the animals are of the same species, the animals are 2 different animals. And for them to walk together they need to make many adjustments. Both have their likes and dislikes. The faster animal should slow down and the slower animal should catch up with the faster one. One may want to sit down, the other may want to run. One may want to drink water, the other may not. It’s a matter of time that the 2 animals fall in sync.
So, a warning for people who are about to choose their life partners. Please be doubly sure that your spouse is also of the same species (born again).
For all the dear ones, who thought that their spouse was of the same species and found them to be not, please also check if you are of that species first and then go to God. He can fix it for sure. Do not be deceived that you can blame your spouse on that day and escape! Remember, it takes 2 to tango.
All others, where both are sure that they are of the same species, the time for them to fall in sync varies from couple to couple. For some it might take and year, for some 10, for some 50 and for some a lifetime. Hang on!!!! It’s worth it.
May we be patient in our marriage and work together to yield results for which our master has purchased us.
