God is saying to Israel and everyone who believed in Christ that they are His servants, it is He who chose them by calling from farthest corners of the earth. In verse 8 God says, “But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend;” Though Jacob was a deceiver, God chose him and calls him His servant by changing Jacob’s name to Israel when Jacob surrendered his life to God and also because of the covenant God made with Abraham, His friend. Despite Jacob’s faults, God chose him to be the leader of a great nation that still bears his name today. God chooses to accomplish His kingdom purposes through sinful people who are willing to believe Him. He can make those sinful people new by giving a new name to those who believe in Jesus Christ.
If we are tempted to think that, because we aren’t performing great acts for God, we are unimportant to Him, then we should consider the life of Jacob and know that, despite our failings, if we surrender our lives to Him, God can and will still use us in His divine plan.
